Help Randy with a life-changing surgery.
From a young age, Randy’s chest has caused them both emotional and physical pain. As a trans person, they have experienced life-long gender dysphoria related to their chest. In a few months Randy will be scheduled to receive a bilateral mastectomy, or top surgery at Northwestern Medical. United Healthcare will not cover what it refers to as “Gender Identity Disorder” and related conditions. Since adolescence, Top Surgery has been on Randy’s agenda. Moving to Chicago in October 2024 was finally the tipping point on the scale of “it’s time to exist for me.”
Randy is not a fool. As hate for the trans community rises, they see the difficulty in receiving gender affirming care. The time is now and it can’t be delayed any longer. After years of not recognizing themself in the mirror, crying trying to get dressed in the morning, avoiding leaving the house as to not be perceived, it’s time to make the ultimate step of self love.
For health reasons, this surgery will drastically improve Randy’s posture. Additionally, the weight of the tissue on Randy’s chest paired with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome means that their ribs often slip out of place.
Randy has dreams for after surgery life. The answer for why they want this surgery is simple. They want to look in the mirror and see themself. They want their clothes to fit. They want to navigate the world without their chest getting in they way. But there’s a less cognitive dream they’ve been missing. Dancing. They grew up their whole childhood doing ballet and other dance styles but all this time never felt comfortable getting back into the dance studio. Without excessive breast tissue getting in the way, they will be able to wear dance clothes again. They will be able to move through space with grace. Randy will be able to reclaim their athleticism and their youthful longing for the beauty of dance. Ballet may just be a hobby in their adult life but they can’t wait to get back to it.
There will be a more detailed cost breakdown below but to keep it short, the surgery itself costs $10,345. Recovery is an additional set of costs for pre-operative appointments, supplies, preparation, and care. After surgery, Randy will not be able to go to work for a minimum of two weeks. There will be an additional few weeks where they will not be able to reach anything above shoulder level. Randy will be applying for grants and has saved up some for this surgery but, as we all know, life happens in unexpected and expensive ways. Any little bit, whether it’s the donation of money, resources, or time is more helpful than you know. There is no doubt in Randy’s mind that this surgery is life-saving. The time is now and they are asking for your help. Thank you.
