My stepfather, Paul Dion, had been battling cancer in his brain, bones, and lungs, as well as suffering multiple strokes that left the right side of his body immobilized. Instead of putting him in a hospice care facility, my mother and his partner of over 20 years, Christine Grzegorzek, chose to stay at home to care for Paul so he could be as comfortable, peaceful, and loved as much as possible in his fight for life. As his caregiver, Christine had to take an unpaid leave of absence from work. Unfortunately, although he never gave up, Paul has succumbed to his illnesses, and our family is now grieving this heartbreaking loss while also facing after-death costs and the income not acquired while Christine was providing care.
Anyone who knew Paul knew what an amazing, selfless, and caring person he was. He was always so positive and full of life. Paul was definitely the life of the party, and he talked to everyone and anyone. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Paul can tell you how great of a man he was. He was always there for everyone, including treating me like I was his own daughter. He leaves behind a brother, two sisters, Christine, myself, the rest of our family, and his five grandsons, who called him GrandPaul. Watching Paul fight for his life was one of the most heartbreaking and hardest things we have ever experienced, and he will be forever missed, never forgotten, and always loved.
