In Memory of Jerry Hastings, Beloved Surveyor

Patty Morgan - In Memory of Jerry Hastings, Beloved Surveyor

Our dear friend Jerry Hastings passed away in a Boise hospital on Friday, August 21. From Jerry’s wife, Carolyn: “Jerry’s passing was very unexpected. He was counting on being home sometime Friday the 21st or Saturday. The last few months we’ve been hit with one thing after another. Thank you all so much for thinking of us. Jerry loved surveying, and he loved the many, many people he met and enjoyed sharing stories and experiences with throughout the years. Please accept my deepest appreciation to the organization and to you all. Jerry counted every one of you as a friend. We will plan a celebration of life sometime in September or October.”

Jerry was a graduate of Notus High School. He started his surveying career in 1977 after running trenchers, plows, and backhoes to install cables for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company and after attending the College of Idaho and Boise State University. Jerry obtained his Land Surveyor Training Certificate in 1982 and his Professional Land Surveyor’s License in 1986. In 1986, Jerry was the construction surveyor for the Lucky Peak Power Plant Project, which started his work in the private sector. Over the next two decades, Jerry worked in the private sector for various engineering and surveying firms, including Treasure Valley Engineers, JUB Engineers, Roylance and Associates, and Inland Engineering Company. He also ran his own surveying company for a while.

In 2004, Jerry brought his expertise to the public sector when he joined Ada County Development Services as Assistant County Surveyor. His dedication and technical skills quickly led to his promotion to Ada County Surveyor in November 2007, a position he has excellently maintained for the past 19 years.

Throughout his career, Jerry has been involved in numerous projects, including the retracing, surveying, and re-monumenting of the Ada County boundary with Boise County, last done in 1883; collaborating with the BLM to re-monument Initial Point, the starting point for all surveys in Idaho; and the signing of around 700 subdivision plats. He has served as a Deputy Clerk Recorder, assisted in establishing survey benchmarks for the area, and held leadership positions with the Idaho Society of Professional Land Surveyors, including President, Section Director, and Legislative Committee member. Jerry was presented with the 2024 Distinguished Service Award from ISPLS, one of the Society’s highest honors.

Jerry was a distinguished surveyor whose unwavering dedication has left a lasting impact on our community and the citizens we serve.
