It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the unexpected passing of my father, Carlos Lazo de la Vega, at the age of 78.
My father was a wonderful force of nature. Even though he lived almost eighty years, his mind and his body remained preternaturally energetic and youthful until his final day. He was always full of plans and projects and filled with the most endless and extraordinary love for his wife, Azucena, and his only son, Rodolfo.
Born in the Yanaquihua district of Arequipa, Peru, in 1946 to Silvio Lazo de la Vega and Rosa Rosas, my father grew up a farmer and moved to New York City in the 1970s where he made his living as a waiter, restaurant manager, and then chauffeur. His loved ones will remember him for his extraordinary generosity, deep curiosity and inventiveness, and his infectiously witty and sarcastic sense of humor. My father was also a dedicated accordion player, naturally gifted chess player, and a great sports fan.
This fundraiser was established to help my family afford funeral costs.

Con gran pesar, compartimos la noticia del inesperado fallecimiento de mi padre, Carlos Lazo de la Vega, a la edad de 78 años.
Mi padre fue una fuerza de la naturaleza maravillosa. A pesar de vivir casi ochenta años, su mente y su cuerpo se mantuvieron extraordinariamente enérgicos y jóvenes hasta su último día. Siempre estuvo lleno de planes y proyectos, y lleno del más infinito y extraordinario amor por su esposa, Azucena, y su único hijo, Rodolfo.
Nacido en el distrito de Yanaquihua, Arequipa, Perú, en 1946, hijo de Silvio Lazo de la Vega y Rosa Rosas, mi padre creció como agricultor y se mudó a la ciudad de Nueva York en la década de 1970, donde se ganó la vida como mesero, gerente de restaurante y luego como chofer. Sus seres queridos lo recordarán por su extraordinaria generosidad, profunda curiosidad e inventiva, y su contagioso sentido del humor, ingenioso y sarcástico. Mi padre también era un dedicado acordeonista, un ajedrecista con un talento natural y un gran aficionado a los deportes.
