In Loving Memory of Thaddeus Smiley — A True Hero
On Friday, May 30th, our lives were forever changed.
Thaddeus Smiley, my brother, made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save our 10-year-old nephew who was struggling in the waters of the Wolf River in Memphis, TN. Without hesitation, he dove in to help — because that’s who he was. Brave. Selfless. Compassionate.
After days of searching by over 100 first responders and volunteers, his body was recovered on Sunday, June 2nd, about half a mile downriver. Our family is heartbroken, but we are also immensely proud. Thaddeus didn’t just talk about doing the right thing — he lived it, even in his final moments.
As Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris said:
“Mr. Smiley is a hero in every sense of the word… someone with the type of courage we should all wish we could emulate.”
Thaddeus was more than a hero that day — he was a loving brother, a son, a friend, and a beacon of light in our lives. He showed us what true courage looks like.
We are starting this fundraiser to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, and to support our family during this painful time. Any amount, no matter how small, would mean the world to us. If you are unable to give, we ask that you please share this page and continue to pray for our healing.
Thaddeus’s legacy of love, strength, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Help us honor him the way he deserves.
Thank you for your support.
— With love,
Javarious Smiley, on behalf of the Smiley family
