On Tuesday, June 3rd, my dad passed away suddenly at 71. He had been recovering in rehab following a stroke. While we tried to be prepared for the worst, we had been hoping for the best with his recovery, and his passing came as a shock.
The last thing I said while visiting him at the hospital was “Oh yeah and make sure you start killing it at rehab. love you.”
Our dad lived simply and was in receipt of an old age pension. He didn’t have life insurance or savings, which has left my sister and me scrambling to cover the immediate costs of simple cremation—all while struggling to manage our own grief. My sister and I have never needed to deal with the administrative aspects of a loved one’s death, and hoped we wouldn’t have to as early as in our 30’s.
I’m reaching out for support to help us manage these unexpected expenses. Once we’re able to take care of up front costs, we hope to begin planning a celebration of life to honour our dad, “Papa Gene.”
