I am starting this fundraiser for my family, and especially for my 31-year-old son. We recently had a conversation no parent is ever prepared for. My son is in acute liver failure, his kidneys are also failing, and he has fluid around his heart. After many documented attempts to stop drinking and multiple relapses, he has been denied a transplant at this time. I have been told his prognosis is 90 days or less. When he told me, “Dad, I don’t want to die,” my heart broke. I am trying to stay strong for him while facing the uncertainty of what comes next.
There is still some hope that a hospital in New York may consider him for a transplant because of his age. If that happens, our family will need to be there with him around the clock for up to three months while he recovers. I am applying for FMLA so I can be by his side, but that time away from work will not provide income. If he is not approved, then we will need to honor his last wishes and cover cremation and funeral-related costs. I am asking for help to prepare for either path ahead, whether that means supporting his fight for more time or giving him the dignity he deserves at the end of life.
