Astrid is a 30-year-old mother, wife, and a gifted bilingual speech and language therapist. She has spent her career helping children and young teens find and use their voice. Now, she needs our voices and our support to help her fight for her life.
Recently, Astrid received a devastating diagnosis: anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of cancer. The diagnosis was shocking and sudden, turning her family’s life upside down overnight.
Despite the urgency and severity of her illness, Astrid remains determined and optimistic. Her love for her one-year-old son, her husband, and her community fuels her strength. She has survived many challenges in her young life, she is a fighter. But the road ahead is daunting and she and her husband cannot do this alone. The necessary treatment will be intensive, expensive, and fast-moving to outpace the cancer. Over the next several months, her days will be consumed with medical procedures, radiation five days a week, chemotherapy, and other targeted adjuvant therapies. She will be unable to work during treatment, and her husband will also have his hands full supporting Astrid and their toddler.
It will take a multifaceted and coordinated approach from the healthcare community and her close friends and family to mount the fight against this illness.
