We are heartbroken to share the passing of Guille Alvarado — a mother, grandmother, fierce advocate, loving friend, and chosen family member to so many in the Latino community of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Guille was a mother to two sons, a proud grandmother, and a mother figure to generations of UVA students. She was a community tía in every sense of the word — feeding us, loving us, showing up for us, and always reminding us of where we come from. She helped countless Latinx students persevere through UVA and advocated fiercely for the rights of her coworkers and her neighbors in Southwood. Guille was an important figure in the Southwood neighborhood — a leader, a source of strength, and the heart of the community.
Guille was one of the realest — honest, outspoken, and unapologetically authentic in every space she entered. Her humor, infectious laugh, radiant smile, and the energy she brought into every room left a lasting mark on all of us. Guille’s presence was a source of warmth and strength for our entire community. Her memory and spirit will continue to live on through everyone she touched.
We are raising funds to support her sons as they move through this incredibly difficult journey of grief and healing. Contributions will help cover the many unexpected costs they’ve taken on — including travel, meals, and time off work — and support Guille’s granddaughter as she continues her education. This is a way to honor the deep love and care Guille gave so freely to others.
️ Thank you for holding her family in your hearts during this time.
Con amor y memoria,
Her community
